About Blair, your hairdresser

Blair Engemann-Bates

In a world full of specialties, my isn't about blondes, reds, or hair extensions—it's about creating an experience.

Lagom Slow-Living Salon is the culmination of 15 years in the beauty industry—-and always feeling like I didn’t quite belong.

Armed with boat loads of empathy, intuition and anxiety….my mind always skewed more toward the experience than the latest trends. Education is everywhere and everyone is good these days, but the EXPERIENCE—your time at the hair salon—that, I wanted to make more remarkable for folks. Because, honestly, I see it as a really intimidating—-you walk into a building full of women, probably sharply dressed, perfectly coiffed and SO SO many of them. You don’t speak the same language, it’s loud, you feel like you’re in borrowed space that may be needed any moment now!

AND you have to make small talk to be polite?? Good grief this is an exhausting “self care beauty service”.

So I’m making it better.

I don’t want to talk about movies, gossip or even your family—that’s what you have friends and brunch dates for. For free. Complimentary.

When you are in my company, I am about YOU and you are about YOU. I’ll handle the comfort and your hair needs, you do whatever quietly fills your cup. And I hope it’s a smut book—no judgements, just recommendations.

You’ve got the rest of your day to think about others. But maybe just your time at Lagom to think about YOU.

Your time in my chair is about enjoying curated slow, intentional moments that allow you to breathe and reset. Taking cues from forest bathing, restful, warm feeling spaces and the sensory experience that having your hair done COULD be, I’ve curated something wonderfully unique for you.

An effortlessly comfortable experience in a salon? Sign me up.

Inspired by the Swedish concept of “lagom”, meaning “not too much, not too little, just right”
you’ll find that balance in every way here. It’s also a large influence on my life at home—well, it’s a least a goal.

In my “away from salon time”, my partner and I have created a space, Camp Fernweh, on our land in Willard, MO. There we host outdoor enthusiasts (and skeptics!) in a canvas tent. When time allows, I put my “jack of all trades” talents towards building a community of local artists and educators to host workshops, campfire book talks and outdoor education opportunities. My partner and I are forward focused on returning our land to its best through conservation efforts, permaculture techniques and native plantings, for the earth, and the two little girls (and their pup) that love to explore the forest.

And this is as much as you will ever, ever hear me say.

Oh! One more thing—-I really want to meet you.
